Some suggestions for 5G commercial use in China
It has been more than a month since 5G was officially commercialized at the end of October 2019. Different from the excitement of the industrial chain, how the three major operators promote the commercial landing of 5G is a difficult problem. Here I would like to talk about some of my thoughts and suggestions on 5G commercial use, especially China Unicom's 5G commercial use.
Terminal first, application is king
5G is the process of quantitative change to qualitative change. If information and communication technology is compared to a highway, 2G can be regarded as a country road, 3G as a four-lane, 4G as 40 lanes, and 5G will be 400 lanes, which will greatly broaden the road for information and communication development. Such a wide road, what car to run, should be determined by user needs, can not beat the head set goals. At the same time, operators also need to guide, and terminals are the pioneers of 5G.
For 5G terminals, the three major operators should pay high attention to several directions. One is to build a new ecology of 5G terminal industry chain, continue to promote the development of 5G general modules, 5G industry terminal incubation, 5G pan-intelligent terminal incubation and 5G application innovation, and work with partners to build the 5G era of the Internet of everything.
The other is the need to give play to the advantages of 5G terminal clusters, focus on the intensive and Internet-based transformation of products, cooperation, channels and marketing methods, take 5G terminals as the entry point, build a 5G terminal full life cycle production and operation support system of "cooperation ecological network", "marketing operation network" and "intelligent delivery network", and create differentiated 5G terminal new operations.
This is actually the "Four modernizations" of 5G terminals proposed at the China Unicom Global industry Chain Partner Conference held in April this year, that is, 5G mobile phones, universal standards, popular prices and ubiquitous terminals.
Innovative thinking incubation business model
What benefits 5G will bring to users is also what the three major operators need to think about, which requires thinking about 5G business models.
China Mobile has proposed to lead the establishment of a global 5G joint innovation center, build 23 open laboratories, accelerate the integration and innovation with the head enterprises, create about 50 5G industry demonstration applications such as smart transportation and smart energy, and incubate 5G featured personal businesses such as ultra-high-definition video and cloud games.
Wang Xiaochu, chairman of China Unicom, recently made an image metaphor of 5G in his speech at the "World 5G Conference", he said that 2G has contributed to the popularity of SMS and MMS, 3G has spawned the integration of Internet and mobile communication, bringing the revolution of smart phones, 4G has brought short video, mobile payment, online travel and other lifestyle changes. 5G will have incredible "chemical reactions" with new technologies such as AI, big data, cloud computing, and blockchain with the characteristics of "large bandwidth, wide connection, low delay, and high speed".
The entire communications industry has been oriented to 2C, selling SIM cards, charging according to traffic and time. 5G is complicated, and operators don't want to keep doing pipelines. To break the pipe. Obviously, operators should use innovative thinking to think about what kind of 5G value can be brought to users, so the terminal operation strategy should also focus on user needs, continue to make the cake bigger, incubate the commercial model.
It is suggested to focus on three aspects: First, focus on key areas such as cloud games, XR, and new live broadcasting to generate 5G killer applications; Second, to work with partners to jointly stimulate the upstream and downstream innovation cooperation in the industrial chain; The third is to promote and incubate 5G business and business models from point to point.
Drive the industrial chain to create 5G killer applications
Wang Xiaochu, chairman of China Unicom, has also pointed out that in terms of lifestyle, 5G will profoundly change the interaction experience between people, people and things, and things through high-definition video, VR/AR, etc., making people's lives better. China Unicom will establish a large network centralized video operation platform, widely aggregate high-quality applications and content, and provide a richer, higher definition, more smooth VR/AR viewing experience, as well as various application services.
A good sign is that the operator's 5G commercial development ideas are very clear, and the results of the early terminal "four modernizations" promotion work are obvious to all.
At the opening ceremony of 5G commercial use by the three major operators on October 30, Ke Ruiwen, chairman of China Telecom, directly pointed out that 5G application is the key.
Recently, China Unicom has also done some forward-looking things, officially launched the first killer application 5G new live broadcast, and gave a definition: new live broadcast is the live broadcast mode after 5G new technology is enabled, with "ultra-high definition + multi-perspective + interaction" and other characteristics; China Unicom has launched the world's first 5G live broadcast base, and three aspects of network, technology and commercial capabilities, from its own 300 million mobile phone users and the needs of video, mobile hall users, to provide double gigabit network and 5G live broadcast technology to the base development, hoping that in the future, "where people go, live broadcast is where."
5G new era, build new thinking!
